How to do thermal insulation: foam or mineral wool?
Let’s leave the lyrical digressions and go straight to the facts.
Each material has a thermal conductivity, which is measured in W / m * K. The lower the thermal conductivity of the material, the more it resists heat transfer.
And here are the numbers. The data are presented in accordance with the state building codes of Ukraine “Thermal insulation of buildings” DNB B.2.6-31: 2006
Comparative characteristics of mineral wool and foam.
Polystyrene with a density of 35 kg / cubic meter under operating conditions, that is, not a dry material, has a coefficient of thermal conductivity of 0.050 W / m * K. Cotton wool with a mineral density of 145 kg / cubic meter – 0.048 W / m * K. The heat resistance of the wall is equal to the thickness of the wall divided by its coefficient of thermal conductivity.
Suppose you have a wall of reinforced concrete, thermal conductivity of 1.69 W / m * K, and its thickness is 20 cm, like a balcony partition of new buildings in Pesochin. Then the heat resistance of such a wall is 0.118 square meters * K / W.
Kharkiv is located in the temperature zone No. 1, where the minimum allowable value of heat resistance for external walls should be 2.8 square meters * K / W.
Suppose you decided to continue the apartment, removed the balcony front wall, glazed the balcony, and decided to insulate its partitions. Mineral wool density of 145 kg / cubic meter Rockwoll FACADE BATTS thickness of 100 mm. 0.1 m of the wall we divide 0.048 W / m * K = 2.083 sq. M. * K / W – this is the heat resistance of a pure insulation + 0.118 sq. * K / W. The heat resistance of a reinforced concrete wall = 2.201 sq. * K / W – received a total heat resistance
Polyfoam with a density of 35 kg / cubic meter 100 mm thick. 0.1 m of the wall we divide 0.050 W / m * K = 2,000 sq. M * K / W – this is the heat resistance of a pure insulation + 0.118 sq. * K / W. The heat resistance of a reinforced concrete wall = 2.118 sq. * K / W – we got the total heat resistance
The result: a difference of 0.083 square meters * K / W. This is 3.77%. That is, with the indicated manufacturers and characteristics, mineral wool is “warmer” than foam by less than 4%, which cannot be said about its price.
Polyfoam or mineral wool – you decide. The heat resistance of these two materials is not very different, but they differ in price. The significant advantages of mineral wool over foam plastic is that the mineral wool does not burn at all and is environmentally friendly. However, be careful when choosing a manufacturer and pay attention to the water absorption of mineral wool, the lower it is, the better.
